The film is helmed by award-winning Australian commercial filmmaker Simon McQuoid, marking his feature directorial debut, and produced by James Wan ( The Conjuring universe films, Aquaman), Todd Garner ( Into the Storm, Tag), McQuoid and E. Mortal Kombat comes to theaters and HBO Max on April 16, 2021. But there are some new glimpses of characters including Scorpion and Goro in the mix, along with a shot of Kabal walking side-by-side with Mileena and what looks to be video game character Reiko – another character the marketing hadn’t spoiled up to this point.

We got our first look at the movie’s Kabal courtesy of a new poster (below), and now we’ve got the first footage of Kabal.Ī series of MK TV spots can be found below, most of them packed with footage we’ve already seen. The small details like the champions being chosen with dragon tattoos and discovering their powers in times of great emotion are what really separates this story from the other film and the entire game series.It’s been a big week for Mortal Kombat, with the James Wan-produced movie officially earning its “R” rating (for “strong bloody violence,” naturally) and the marketing confirming that video game character Kabal will be included in the movie. Overall, the story hasn't changed too much and that's ok. Kung Lao and Liu Kang are warriors in the servitude of Lord Raiden.
Sonya Blade and Jax Briggs are pursuing the other champions in order to band together in a group effort against Outworld.
Cole Young is an MMA fighter among those branded and chosen to defend Earthrealm. Sub-Zero is being used as a weapon by Shang Tsung to ensure their tenth victory before the tournament even gets started. Sub-Zero and Scorpion are mortal enemies dating back to the feud between the Shirai Ryu and the Lin Kuei. If they do this, they get to invade Earthrealm with the permission of the Elder Gods and therefore control Earth forever. Outworld has won nine straight Mortal Kombat tournaments in pursuit of their tenth victory over Earthrealm.
